I literally read this topic today in the book The Power of Intention by Wayne Dyer. Well let me back track a minute... anybody ever heard of the book 'The Purpose Driven Life'? Well I have seen it on just about everybodys bookshelf lately and when I asked a friend who had finished the book what it said, he told me that basically it says that we all have a purpose but there is no way to know what it is. You just have to live your life with purpose blah blah blah. Well as you can see this made me feel like not even reading that book since it seemed like a dead end as far as answers go. Well TODAY I got my answer on this one so thought I would share it with this tribe....
Okay so from the book The Power of Intention, this is what it says:
"As I mentioned, the key question for most of us is 'What is my purpose?' And I hear that question in as many forms as there are people wondering about it: 'What am I supposed to be doing? Should I be an architect, florist, or a veterinarian? Should I help people or fix automobiles? Am I supposed to have a family or be in the jungle saving chimpanzees?' We're befuddled by the endless number of options available to us, and wonder whether we're doing the right thing.
In this chapter, I urge you to forget these questions. Move instead to a place of faith and trust in the universal mind of intention, remembering that you emanated from this mind and that you're piece of it at all times.
Intention and purpose are as beautifully and naturally intertwined as the double helix of your DNA. There are no accidents. You're here for the purpose that you signed up for before you entered the world of particles and form. Many of the things that you refer to as problems result from the fact that you're disconnected from intention to live your life on purpose. As you cleanse this link you'll make two very important discoveries. First, you'll discover that your purpose is not as much about what you do as how you feel. Your second discovery will be that feeling on purpose activates your power of intention to create anything that's consisten with the seven faces of intention.
In response to the question 'what should I do with my life?', I suggest that there's only one thing that you can do with it, since you came into this life with nothing and you'll leave with nothing: YOU CAN GIVE IT AWAY. You'll feel most on purpose when you're giving your life away by serving others. When you're giving to others, to your planet, and to your Source, you're BEING purpose-ful. Whatever it is that you choose to do, if you're motivated to be of service to others while being authentically detached from the outcome, you'll feel on purpose, regardless of how much abundance flows back to you.'
This is an awesome new perspective to take and I am excited to put this into practice. I hope this has helped!

Re: what IS our purpose here???
Mon, July 31, 2006 - 10:42 PMhi julie and all-
agreed, service, giving, is critical to being in the flow. as is receiving. in order to live in some semblance of balance i need o let it flow out yes, and flow in as well. perhaps flow through, unimpeded is the real trick.
i've pondered this question - purpose - forever, and come to 2 conclusions; 1) i put way too much effort into thinking about it rather than BEing, and 2) i think the real purpose is to show god a good time, to love in whatever way calls to our hearts, and to laugh and to cry and to live big. it's not so much about what we choose to do, as what we choose to be.
namaste...

Re: what IS our purpose here???
Tue, August 1, 2006 - 9:02 AMOn another tribe I was directed to a web link...can't remember it---will find if you absaloutly need it--THE cool thing was the exersize on how to figure out what your purpose is---basically, with pad and paper, start writing down what you think your psurpose is etc., and you will know you have found your purpose when you break down in tears. I did it and within 10 min was crying-- my purpose?--' to give people hope'..hokey maybe and there is no clear set of directions but if that is my purpose than how that manifests in an 'occupation etc', is not really as important as being in a position to give people hope in whatever capacity--actually, maybe I will start a new thread and challenge people to take the test, which means I'll prob. have to go find the link--lol. Thanks. -

Re: what IS our purpose here???
Mon, August 7, 2006 - 11:02 AMIf you're looking for another good book that guides you through the process, I really enjoyed reading (and doing the exercises) in Sonia Choquette's book, "Your Heart's Desire." One more fantastic book I use with my clients is "Divine Intuition: Your Guide to Creating a Life You Love" by Lynn Robinson. Hope that helps!

Re: what IS our purpose here???
Mon, September 4, 2006 - 2:19 AMJulie.... thanks for sharing that quote.
Yes... service... we need to figure out what we've come here to do.
At age 17, when I asked myself "what is my purpose?" my answer was "my purpose is to inspire others to find their purpose." So... I planned a kayak trip around North America, and wrote all about my journey on www.solomax.com and toured with a slide show sharing my journey. I got as far as Central Mexico thus far, and for the past six years have been focused on creating a cultural exchange community center in Mexico. I just checked the link under Scott's name above, and it took me to a cultural exchange project in Costa Rica... which is basically what I'm working on. I love all the connections happening here on tribe.net
So as for finding purpose and a sense of place... finding where you fit into the world and community, it is important to travel and get to know people on intimate levels.
What I'm seeing are community centers where travelers can stay or get connected to host families, which are an instant "in" to the community. While there, you'd offer your skills doing volunteer work - could be construction, gardening, or teaching anything. This Costa Rica project looks like this. I'll have to go visit.
This project I'm leading in Mexico (see www.solomax.com/roblito.html ) I'd like it to be free. We'd need to support the families and community... so we'd be a blessing there, but the intent is to make this project open to all people regardless of income. It just wouldn't be a money thing. We'd put our talents together and make something great. I have the land and connections all set up. It comes down to me being ready, and finding the right people to be involved. There will be eco-tourism as part of it, and I will be a leader in this project, but it needs to be a circle sort of thing. Meaning... I don't want all the responsiblity to fall on me. The dream is to have whole community of Roblito and the Action Heroes sit in a circle and decide what is best for everyone. When everyone feels invested, and empowered, I believe amazing things will happen. I have been given this awesome opportunity, and hold a vision, but it is not about me. I see a place like a rainbow gathering, where people come for two weeks to six months, and we build something that we don't own. We'll plant bamboo and make huge geodesic domes with this bamboo. And it will be a place to teach permaculture and how to build community. Does this sound like something you are interested in? This is my purpose. actionhero.tribe.net is the gathering place.
The guy who created Monster.com loaned me the 60ft geodesic dome he uses at Burning man, and I set it up with a Rainbow kitchen in Katrinaland, and we served 1000 to 3000 meals a day for nine months. It was the most radical scene to come out of the entire relief effort.
We can create these domes out of bamboo and have them in every town and city all over the planet.
Having a community center, a place to circle, a place to listen and be heard, is what is most needed in this day and age. Our current community centers and places of learning are often over structured, and can disempower. Churches and schools bring people together, but they can also devide. I'm not saying I know how to unite all people, but I'm sure free food, fun, and circles have something to do with it.
I'm stoked all of you are here showing up for the task and offering encouragement. I'm open to working and playing with any and all of you. At this time it is 6:15am and I am working the over night shift at a group home for young offenders in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. I plan to fly to Central Mexico during the winter holidaze and will spend a couple months working on this cultural exchange community center project. Let me know if you want to take part: cor.contact@gmail.com
Action Heroes unite!

Mon, September 4, 2006 - 6:44 AMWow. It was so refreshing to read your post, Cor, as well as to check out your websites. The project you are working on looks amazing. I'd love to chat with you more about how we could help one another. I'd especially like to brainstorm with you about ideas at integrating purpose work into these projects.

Re: what IS our purpose here???
Thu, February 8, 2007 - 8:13 AMI can`t take this [her] book seriously. It is rather dogmatic and puts me in mind of pseudo-spiritual mumbo-jumbo that passes itself off these days. If you enjoy it though - then enjoy it.

Re: what IS our purpose here???
Thu, August 30, 2007 - 6:05 PMThat is nicely written, thanks for sharing it.
It reminds me of the Book of Ecclesiastes where it says, "whatever you find to do , do it with thy might"
(or something like that - I think I got pretty close!), which I think refers to will and intention - that is, I think you
could substitute will or intention for the word "might" in the sentence.

Re: what IS our purpose here???
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 9:58 PMOur purpose here is to experience every possible event, feeling, sensation, perception, EXPERIENCE; in order to permanently shift consciousness of your Soul, and to evolve your energy into a higher state of BEing; and to come back again and again until we have accomplished every experience we sought out. This is the only place (Earth) where we become a part of the fabric of reality, thus permanently marking our souls with our experiences... To GROW is the GOAL :)
I will admit I didn't actually read all of your post. I just wanted to share my view.
much love

Re: what IS our purpose here???
Fri, October 26, 2007 - 6:44 AMI think we are meant to bide our time on earth and live daily to the fullest of our abilities. This includes expanding our abilities to be as usefull as poaaible to any that might be in need of ourselves, including ourselves.
I think we should do unto others as we would have done to ourselves, and bide our time.
Until when?
I think we are here to help others.
I think I am here so that I might touch another, or others, possibily in ways unknown to me, but if I am not here, not trying to be all, to be better, to be fulfilled, I cannot possibly help others without the tools and or experiance to do so when they might need me.
I think I am here to tell a friend not to drive one day when he is drunk, to touch another with a story of something I have lived through so that they may learn thru my experience rather than have to experience it themselves and possibly not come thru it, or thru it well. I think I am here to relate to others in their time of need, even if I never know I have done so.
I think I am here to hold your hand, and most importantly to hold out mu hand, which means I have to be as fulfilled as I can be so that I am able to extend my hand to you when you look for one in a crowd.
I think my existance has nothing to do with myself, but rather with the survival of others. I am here to ensure that you are here, so that you are here for another, and he/she is here for another and so on and so on.
During that time I am here, there are others here to ensure others are here, to ensure I am here, so that I cvan be here when I too am needed by others.
It is not so good girl glorified as it seems. I am no sait. If i have not delved into darkness I cannot have seen a light to shed on any situation. I cannot see others in darkness if I am not there to see it, so when I say I am here foer you, I have to be as fulfilled as I can be, I am doing so in being me, both dark and light sides of me, knowing that I might meet you in the dark or the light, and knowing that you might also touch me in darkness or in light, and both are welcomed because they make me who I am right this second. And at any give second I could be needed by anyone, anywhere.
This was wonderful to be asked and to be answered. Very fulfilling. Very light shining on those of us in a place where we can be helpfull for those to see us in a place where they may need to see some light.
I believe in this completely and have seen it work daily almost when I am looking. I have seen it on tribe.net, and I have also found it here.
Great thread!!

Re: what IS our purpose here???
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 8:13 PMI was blessed to meet this amazing healer when I went to a Spiritual journey last December. I was guided that day to stay behind and not go to one of the Mayan cities and talk to her.
When we were alone that day, she asked me, "So, Malin are you living your joy, bliss and happiness?" My response was, " Yes, I am joy." Knowing that I was living in between worlds- love and illusion. She asked again looking through my soul and in knowingness of absolute truth she said again, "No, are you living, your joy, bliss and happiness?" This question played in my the very core of my soul for a week. And realized "oh s**t I'm not. I better fix that immediately."
Two weeks after the journey to the Yucatan, I gave my notice as an attorney and stepped into my true pasion, alchemy, healing, being an artist, and blooming my capacity to LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!! Yes, alchemy, healing, being an artist has always been passion, and now I am living it. ;-)
I am eternally grateful to this amazing Healer Shaman Goddess.
